The short story
Everything heavy — engine, guns, pilot, tank — sat in the front seven feet, wrapped around a rotary engine that turned the whole aircraft with it. The result killed novices in droves and made aces of survivors: 1,294 victories, more than any other Allied fighter. It would turn right so fast that pilots turned right to go left.
