Boulton Paul Defiant

A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as N1671, the RAF Museum’s Boulton Paul Defiant Mk I, built at Pendeford, Wolverhampton with a Rolls-Royce Merlin III and taken on charge in August 1940, flown as ‘EW-D’ by No. 307 (Lwów) Squadron, the first Polish night-fighter unit, from September 1940, later with No. 153 Squadron and No. 285 (Anti-Aircraft Co-operation) Squadron, set aside for preservation in 1944, displayed at Hendon from 1972 and at Cosford since its restoration in 2012: the only complete surviving Defiant, a two-seat turret fighter of 39 ft 4 in span with no forward-firing guns, its four Brownings in a power-operated Boulton Paul Type A turret behind the pilot, flanked by retractable fairings, a ventral radiator and inward-retracting main wheels, shown as it is displayed there: matt black overall, type A1 fuselage roundels between pale grey ‘EW’ and ‘D’ codes, the serial in dull red, type B roundels above the wings, a red, white and blue fin flash, a Polish red and white checkerboard below the port windscreen, the turret’s guns raised and a black three-blade propeller with yellow tips.
