About the plates

Why these aircraft

The collection began with the ten types held by the most UK collections in the gazetteer’s Compendium, from the Vampire (seventeen collections) to the Hurricane, which takes tenth place from a five-way tie on ten. The Lancaster, B-17, Fokker Dr.I, Supermarine S.6A and Avro Anson followed, and more are on the drawing board, among them the Jet Provost, Phantom, Tornado, Wessex and Sea Vixen.

How the plates were drawn

Every profile is an orthographic render of the same procedural Blender model you can open on its plate: port side, nose to the left, set level and lit like the gouache profiles in the aircraft annuals of the 1960s and 70s. Each model was built from published dimensions and three-view drawings, checked against photographs of one real airframe, and painted as that aircraft.

Profiles and models are procedural interpretations built in Blender from published dimensions, three-view drawings and photographs of each airframe. Treat the museum aircraft as the reference.
