The P-61B 42-39468 ‘Moon Light Serenade’ in 3D
A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as Northrop P-61B Black Widow 42-39468 ‘Moon Light Serenade’ of the 550th Night Fighter Squadron, US Army Air Forces, south-west Pacific 1944–45, as displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, on P-61C airframe 43-8353: a three-seat twin-engined radar night fighter with a long central crew nacelle carrying a black radar nose, a stepped pilot’s canopy, a gunner’s canopy behind it and a remotely controlled dorsal turret with four machine guns, a glazed tail cone for the radar operator, a high-set wing with two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radials and four-blade propellers, and twin booms ending in tall fins joined by a high tailplane, shown level on its tricycle undercarriage with four drop tanks under the wings: gloss black overall, light green spinners, cowl bands, nose anti-glare panel and wing tips, ‘Moon Light Serenade’ in yellow script on the port side of the nose, star-and-bar insignia on the booms and wings, and black propellers with yellow tips, as photographed at Dayton 2005–2019 (no P-61 is in a UK museum; shape from Northrop’s dimensioned general-arrangement and crew-nacelle drawings with a published P-61B three-view; the fins are left plain because no photograph of them on the current display was found, and the port wing tip and upper-wing insignia are assumed to match the photographed side).
