Why it matters

The short story

Mitchell’s 1929 Schneider Trophy racer — a Rolls-Royce ‘R’ engine wearing the minimum legal amount of aeroplane. The S.6 line won the Trophy outright in 1931 and pushed the world record past 400 mph; its engine begat the Merlin, its designer begat the Spitfire, and the S.6A itself sits in Southampton, a mile from where it was built. The whole story is told in Supplement No. 1.
