The C-17A Globemaster III, ZZ173 in 3D

A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as ZZ173, a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III of No. 99 Squadron, Royal Air Force, one of the eight C-17s (ZZ171 to ZZ178) flown from RAF Brize Norton: a four-engined strategic airlifter with a high, swept supercritical wing set with anhedral and tipped with upswept winglets, four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofans in pods hung on pylons below the wing, with thrust reversers, large flap-track fairings under the trailing edge, a T-tail with a swept fin, a wide, deep cargo hold ending in a loading ramp under the upswept tail, a twin-wheel nose leg and main undercarriage of two legs each side, each with three wheels, retracting into fuselage sponsons: medium grey overall with bare-metal intake lips, black ‘ROYAL AIR FORCE’ titles behind the flight deck with a small Union flag below, black ‘ZZ173’ on the nose and on the rear fuselage behind a low-visibility red and blue roundel, low-visibility roundels on the wing tips above and below, and a red and blue fin flash with the No. 99 Squadron puma badge, as photographed at the Royal International Air Tattoo in 2013 (shape from Boeing’s own three-view drawing of the C-17, checked against photographs of ZZ173 and a side-on photograph of its sister aircraft ZZ175; the four sources disagree on the engine positions by up to a metre, so the median is used, the thrust reversers are shown stowed, and the small stencils are left off).
