The short story
A 30 mm Gatling gun that files a flight plan — the rest of the aeroplane is there to get the Avenger onto the target and the pilot home. Twin engines high on the rear fuselage, straight wings for loiter, and a titanium bathtub around the cockpit: the A-10 was built to live under the air battle while chewing armour. Duxford’s sits in the American Air Museum, looking exactly as uninterested in air superiority as the day it was designed.
