History

The story of 3579

Arado built Werknummer 3579 at Warnemünde in June 1939 and it was brought up to E-4 standard early in 1940. That April it was with LG 2 at Westerland, coded White 14 and flown by Lt Friedrich Geishardt. The unit moved to Calais-Marck in July 1940.

In August and September 1940 Fähnrich Hans-Joachim Marseille flew it with I.(J)/LG 2, claiming Spitfires on 24 August and 2 September. On 2 September it was damaged fighting No. 74 Squadron Spitfires near Sheerness. Marseille got it back across the Channel and belly-landed at Calais-Marck, with the airframe assessed as 50 per cent damaged.

Erla repaired it at Antwerp, and it later served with JG 77, which became JG 5, as White 7. It was damaged near Alakurtti in Russia on 7 December 1941 and rebuilt at Oslo-Kjeller between January and April 1942. On 2 August 1942 Lt Kurt Hammel force-landed it on the front line after combat, and it was left there.

The Russian Aircraft Recovery Group found it in swampland in summer 1992. Charleston Aviation bought it that September and spent six years rebuilding it; it flew again on 29 September 1999 with the Museum of Flying in California. Ed Russell's group in Ontario bought it in 2003 and flew it as CF-EML until 2010. A UK buyer took it in November 2014 and it was registered G-CIPB. After one test flight in June 2017 its DB 601 needed more work, and it flew again on 2 November 2018.
