About this museum
Not a museum and all the better for it: the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar is a working Spitfire restoration shop holding one of the largest concentrations of airworthy Spitfires anywhere, on the most famous fighter station of them all. Tours walk you between live rebuilds — rivets out, history exposed — and for the price of a decent used car you can be flown in a two-seat Spitfire over the Weald.
Listed inventory: 6 airframes.
A rotating dozen-ish airworthy and in-rebuild Spitfires plus a Hurricane and Buchón; the 'Sit in a Spitfire' add-on is the affordable gateway drug, per near-unanimous reviews.
- Up to 15 Spitfires on site at any time
- Battle of Britain-veteran Bf 109E
- 1940 Sea Hurricane Mk.X
Pre-booked tours only (~£49 for the technical evening tour, widely endorsed). This is a live workshop: expect engineers, noise and the best kind of untidiness.
- “Fascinating insight with knowledgeable guide and incredible to see not only the restoration work but training of a new young generation with this skill set.”— David Hollander
- “What a marvellous experience, one of the highlights of my year. So well organised, the guys taking the technical tour were so knowledgeable, Alex and Adam really knew their stuff….the best bit was the way they put over their passion for the job they were doing, well done lads.”— Roger Foster
