The story of 37918
Saab built 37918 in 1976 as an SH 37, the maritime strike and reconnaissance Viggen. It carried a sea-search radar, a cockpit camera and a tape recorder for mission debriefs.
It served with two Swedish Air Force wings, F 10 and F 21. Between 1993 and 1998 it was upgraded to AJSH 37 standard, with new avionics and an offset reconnaissance pod. The type left Swedish service in 2005.
The Swedish Air Force agreed to lend it to Newark Air Museum, returning the signed end-user certificate on 21 December 2005. After several false starts, Captain Jonas Haraldsson of the Swedish Air Force flew it to RAF Cranwell on 7 February 2006.
Once deactivated, it was dismantled by museum volunteers and moved by road in sections. The last pieces reached Winthorpe on 25 June 2006. Volunteers reassembled it, and the formal handover took place in December 2006.
It wears F 21 markings and is the only Viggen on public display in the UK.
