The story of A4O-AB

Construction number 820 was registered G-ASIX to British United Airways on 29 May 1963. Captain Lew Roberts flew it from Brooklands to Wisley on 17 October 1964, and BUA took delivery on 31 October. It returned to Brooklands for modifications in 1965.

After the BUA and Caledonian merger in November 1970 it flew with what became British Caledonian. It was substantially damaged in an incident over the Andes on 18 June 1971.

On 2 October 1974 it was sold to Sultan Qaboos bin Said for the Oman Royal Flight. It became A4O-AB eight days later. BAC at Hurn fitted the first VIP interior. A second VIP cabin was installed at Jet Aviation, Basle, in 1982.

It left Seeb for the last time on 5 July 1987. The next day it flew from Heathrow to Brooklands, with a flypast at Farnborough on the way. This was the last flight by a civil VC10. The Omani ambassador and museum chairman Sir Peter Masefield were on board.

In December 1991 its registration was painted out at the Sultan's request. A River Wey flood in 2000 left it standing in water. On 7 June 2004 it was towed across the river into the Aircraft Park. The A4O-AB marks were reapplied during an exterior refit in July 2023.
