The story of Z2389
Z2389 was built by Hawker at Kingston upon Thames in 1940, in the fifth production batch of 1,000 Hurricanes. It was assembled and test flown at Brooklands or Langley.
During 1941 it passed through five RAF squadrons. One was No. 71 'Eagle' Squadron of American volunteers at Martlesham Heath, whose markings it now wears.
In 1942 it was crated as aid to the Soviet Union and shipped in Convoy PQ16, which sailed for Murmansk on 21 May. It joined the Red Air Force's 767th Regiment on the Kola Peninsula. On 20 June 1942 it fought two Bf 109Fs and five Bf 110s near Murmansk and was shot down with two other Hurricanes. Its pilot, Flt Lt Ivan Kalashnikov, survived the forced landing.
Russian historians recovered the wreck in 1996 and took it to St Petersburg. Recovery specialist Jim Pearce and the museum inspected it the next year. It reached Brooklands on 14 October 1997, the first historic aircraft bought with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
A volunteer team formed in 1999 and worked until 2019, about 60,000 hours in all. They rebuilt the steel and wood structure, recovered the fuselage and restored the cockpit. A Merlin II engine came from a visitor who had one in his garage. The finished aircraft was unveiled in 2019.
