The story of G-AXDN

G-AXDN was the British pre-production Concorde, built by BAC at Filton and registered to the Ministry of Technology on 16 April 1969. It was rolled out on 20 September 1971. Brian Trubshaw and John Cochrane first flew it on 17 December 1971, from Filton to RAF Fairford.

It went supersonic on 12 February 1972, limited to Mach 1.5 by its fixed intakes. Back at Filton from August 1972, it gained variable intakes, production Olympus 593 engines and revised wing leading edges. It was also the first Concorde with the droop nose and glass visor later used on production aircraft. Intake trials from Tangier in March 1974 took it to Mach 2.23 at 63,700 ft.

In September 1974 it opened the Farnborough show. On 7 November 1974 it flew from Fairford to Bangor, Maine, in 2 hours 56 minutes. It then went on to Moses Lake for icing trials. Tropical icing work followed at Nairobi in early 1975, and test flying ended that May after 273 flights and about 575 hours.

After storage at Fairford and Filton, it made short-landing checks at Filton on 18 August 1977. On 20 August Trubshaw and Cochrane flew it into Duxford's 6,000 ft runway and handed it to the Duxford Aviation Society. Visitors were first allowed aboard in March 1978. Heritage Concorde volunteers have since lit the cockpit and made the droop nose work again.
