The story of G-IRJX
The RJX re-engined the Avro RJ, itself a development of the BAe 146, with four Honeywell AS977 turbofans. British European ordered 12 RJX-100s with eight options, and Druk Air ordered RJX-85s. Three aircraft flew before the end: an RJX85 prototype, this RJX100 prototype and one production RJX100.
G-IRJX was the second of the three. The Avro Heritage Museum dates its first flight to 23 September 2001, twelve days after the US terror attacks; other accounts say April 2001, the RJX85's first-flight month. On 27 November 2001 BAE Systems closed its regional aircraft business and halted the RJX, citing the downturn after 11 September.
BAE Systems donated the prototype to Manchester Airport. On 6 February 2003 test pilots Alan Foster and Al McDicken flew it the short hop from Woodford. They made a farewell pass over the Woodford workforce and rocked the wings on arrival, where airport fire crews gave it a water arch. Salford University's aeronautical engineering department was also to use the airframe.
It is often described as the last complete airliner built in Britain. The park's Volunteer Engineering Team now looks after it.
