The story of XH892
XH892 was built by Gloster as a Javelin FAW.7, construction number 11329, and went straight into storage at No. 5 Maintenance Unit, Kemble, in April 1958. It sat there for over a year without joining a squadron. In July 1959 it returned to Gloster for conversion to FAW.9R standard. The FAW.9R added reheated Sapphire 7R engines and a large in-flight refuelling probe.
It joined No. 23 Squadron at Coltishall in May 1960, where crews practised refuelling from No. 214 Squadron Valiants out of Marham. The squadron moved to Leuchars in early 1964. In October 1964 XH892 went to No. 64 Squadron at Binbrook, and in May 1965 to No. 29 Squadron at Akrotiri, Cyprus.
After Rhodesia declared independence in November 1965, it was one of ten Javelins sent to Ndola in Zambia. It returned to Cyprus in September 1966 and was retired in April 1967, after about seven years of squadron flying. It was then stored at Shawbury. In 1973 it joined the station collection at RAF Colerne. Sold in March 1976, it was bought by Jeff Hawke and stored at Duxford. It moved to the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in 1983 and now stands outside at Flixton.
