Aviation museums in Kent

British flying started in Kent, and the Battle of Britain was fought over it. At Eastchurch on Sheppey, John Moore-Brabazon made the first flight by a British pilot in Britain in 1909. Short Brothers built aircraft there. Manston was heavily bombed in August 1940, and in May 1943 617 Squadron flew trial bouncing bombs from it to Reculver.

Kent and its aviation

The collections lean to 1940. The Kent Battle of Britain Museum near Folkestone holds a Bf 109E-4 wreck, a Storch and a Spanish-built He 111. Manston’s two museums share a site: Spitfire TB752 and Hurricane LF751 in one, Cold War jets such as Lightning XR770 in the other. Lashenden keeps a piloted V-1, the Fi 103R Reichenberg.
