Aviation museums in Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire’s wartime airfields did unusual jobs. From Harrington, the USAAF ‘Carpetbaggers’ flew black-painted B-24s, dropping agents and supplies to resistance groups. Thor missiles stood there from 1958 to 1963. Sywell, opened in 1928, repaired Wellingtons and built nearly 100 Lancasters. King’s Cliffe flew the 20th Fighter Group, and Glenn Miller played his last airfield concert there on 3 October 1944.

Northamptonshire and its aviation

The three museums are small, and none holds more than five airframes. Sywell’s free museum has Hunter F.2 WN904 and Jetstream 200 G-RAVL, beside the 1930s clubhouse that is now the Aviator Hotel. Harrington’s museum stands on the Carpetbagger airfield. King’s Cliffe tells the 20th Fighter Group’s story and opens one Sunday a month.
