Fowlmere in 1940, and the 339th Fighter Group
Fowlmere had two wars in one field. In 1940 it was Duxford's satellite, flying Spitfires of 19 Squadron through the Battle of Britain; from 1944 it was Station 378, home of the 339th Fighter Group and its P-51 Mustangs. The museum keeps both stories, plus the unexpected post-war chapter of the Polish resettlement camp that occupied the site afterwards.
