Aviation museums in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire is fighter country. At Duxford, 19 Squadron became the first to fly the Spitfire, in August 1938. The USAAF’s 78th Fighter Group flew P-47s and then P-51s from there from 1943. Bottisham hosted the 361st Fighter Group in 1943–44. Witchford was a bomber station, flying Lancasters with 115 Squadron.

IWM Duxford is the largest collection in the gazetteer, with 146 airframes, from a B.E.2c to Concorde 101 and TSR-2 XR222. It became an IWM site in 1976. The other three are small. Bottisham has a P-51D replica and opens seasonally. Fowlmere, 3 miles from Duxford, is free. The RAF Witchford Collection near Ely tells its station’s story without aircraft.
