Blackburn Type D

A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as G-AANI (BAPC.5), the Shuttleworth Collection’s Blackburn Type D, built in Leeds in 1912 for Cyril Foggin and the oldest British aeroplane still flying: Robert Blackburn’s wire-braced single-seat monoplane, with a constant-chord wing warped for roll control and braced from a kingpost above and the chassis below, a fuselage of triangular section, a swept tailplane with elevators, a fin with a single rudder, a 50 hp Gnome rotary under a horseshoe cowl driving a two-bladed propeller, and a chassis of two wheels and hockey-stick skids, shown standing tail-down on its wheels and tail skid as flown from Old Warden: a polished aluminium cowl and forward fuselage, clear-doped cream linen with the ribs and ash girder showing through, varnished ash struts, kingpost and skids, black steel tail post and engine-bay frame, a dark mahogany propeller and no markings on the airframe (no three-view of the type is published, so the shape follows two scale-model plans at A.
