The story of G-AANI
Robert Blackburn's Leeds works built this single-seat monoplane in 1912 for Cyril Foggin, a newly qualified pilot. It first flew late that year, with Harold Blackburn at the controls in December. Foggin flew it himself from March 1913 and gave demonstrations.
Later in 1913 Foggin sold it to Montague Francis Glew. Glew gave exhibition flights and survived several minor crashes. In 1914 he damaged it beyond his ability to repair at Wittering, and with war starting it was put away on the family farm there.
The remains lay forgotten for over 20 years. They were found at the back of a barn, partly hidden by a haystack; Shuttleworth gives 1937 and other accounts give 1938. Richard Shuttleworth bought them and began a long restoration.
The work was completed after the Second World War. Most of the airframe is original; new main spars, cowling, some minor woodwork and fabric were needed. A 1916 Gnome Omega rotary replaced the original engine. The second first flight was on 17 September, in 1947 or 1949 depending on the source. Minor repairs and new fabric followed in 1988.
