Where to see pioneer aircraft from before 1914 in the UK

Little flew before 1914, and less survives. Samuel Cody made the first powered flight in the UK at Farnborough on 16 October 1908. Originals from those years are rare. Most of what museums show are replicas, some flyable. Typical types are the Roe I Triplane, the Bristol Boxkite and the Wright Flyer.

They include Blériot XI G-AANG, described as the world’s oldest airworthy aircraft, and the 1912 Blackburn Type D, the oldest airworthy British aeroplane. Elsewhere it is a few exhibits each. The RAF Museum has a Blériot XXVII; Aerospace Bristol a Boxkite replica; Elvington Cayley glider and Wright Flyer replicas.
