The short story
The Wooden Wonder: a bomber with no guns, built of ply and balsa by furniture makers, that outran fighters for three years and did every job the RAF had — bombing, night fighting, photo-reconnaissance, pinpoint raids through prison walls. The prototype itself survives at the De Havilland museum, in the barn complex where it was designed in secret. Göring said the sight of it made him green with envy; he was not the last.
