Roe I Triplane

A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as BAPC.6, the full-size replica of Alliott Verdon Roe’s first triplane built by apprentices of A.V. Roe & Co in 1952, displayed for decades at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and now at Hooton Park: the paper-covered triplane in which Roe made the first flights by an all-British aeroplane, on Lea Marshes in July 1909, with three wings of 20 ft span, a matching triplane tail with a rectangular rudder carried behind a triangular girder fuselage, a 9 hp JAP twin-cylinder engine in the nose driving a four-bladed tractor propeller by a belt, and a chassis of two bicycle wheels with a small tail wheel, shown standing almost level on its wheels: amber doped paper on the wings, tail and fuselage sides with the ribs showing through, black ‘BULL’S-EYE AVROPLANE’ lettering on both sides of the fuselage and the race number ‘14’ on the rudder, as Roe showed it at the Blackpool meeting of October 1909, dark red-brown varnished struts and frames, a black steel chassis, and red-tipped wooden propeller blades (no drawing of the Roe I is published: the shape is measured from photographs of this replica and of the original in the Science Museum, and the replica stands about 4 in taller than the published 9 ft).
