The story of AR501
Westland completed AR501 at Yeovil on 19 June 1942. It joined No. 310 (Czechoslovak) Squadron at Exeter on 19 July and flew its first sortie, a convoy patrol, on 3 August. Over the next eight months it flew 74 operations, at first with Sqn Ldr František Doležal. Many were escorts for B-17s of the US 91st Bomb Group from Bassingbourn.
In February 1944 it passed to No. 312 (Czechoslovak) Squadron and then to No. 422 Squadron RCAF for fighter affiliation. After an accident on 9 September 1944 it was repaired with clipped wingtips. It ended the war with the Central Gunnery School.
On 21 March 1946 it was flown to Loughborough College as a training airframe. In 1961 the Shuttleworth Collection swapped a Jet Provost for it and Sea Hurricane Z7015. Simpsons Aero Services made it airworthy at Henlow, and it flew on 27 May 1968 for the film Battle of Britain.
A Duxford volunteer team rebuilt it from 1973, and Neil Williams flew it on 27 June 1975. It moved to Old Warden in 1981 and wore full-span wings for Pearl Harbor filming in 2000. Withdrawn in 2005 with low oil pressure, it was stripped and rebuilt in house. Stu Goldspink flew it again on 20 March 2018.
