The story of LF363
LF363 first flew on 1 January 1944 and was the last Hurricane to enter RAF service. It later became a film aircraft, appearing in Angels One Five, Reach for the Sky and Battle of Britain.
It went on to fly with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. On 11 September 1991, flying to Jersey, its engine suffered a camshaft failure. Sqn Ldr Allan Martin diverted to RAF Wittering.
The engine stopped on final approach. LF363 hit the runway with its wheels up and caught fire. Martin escaped with a broken ankle and minor burns.
The wreck was stored for about three years. Historic Flying Ltd at Audley End, Essex, then rebuilt it over roughly four years. To help pay, the Flight sold Spitfire PS853 in 1996; Rolls-Royce now flies it.
On 25 July 2015 an oil pipe fractured during a flypast near Cadwell Park. Sqn Ldr Mark Discombe nursed the aircraft back to Coningsby and landed safely. It was repaired and returned to display flying, and is listed as airworthy.
