About this museum
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's working hangar at RAF Coningsby is not a museum so much as an open engine bay: these Spitfires, Hurricanes, the Dakota and the Lancaster are operational RAF aircraft that happen to be eighty years old, and the guided tour walks you around them mid-maintenance. Guides are encyclopaedic; the smell is authentic Merlin.
Lancaster PA474 — one of only two airworthy Lancasters on Earth — when she's home (she periodically visits Duxford for deep maintenance, so check before travelling).
- Lancaster PA474
- Spitfire Mk.IIa P7350 — a flying Battle of Britain veteran
- Hurricane LF363
Access is by guided tour only (~90 min, ~£12): book ahead, and note the spotters' car park by the Coningsby runway for free Typhoon-and-warbird traffic afterwards.
