Why it matters
The short story
The Battle of Britain’s actual workhorse: more numerous than the Spitfire, easier to build, easier to fix, and credited with more victories in the Battle than every other defence combined. Camm’s masterpiece of the practical — tube, fabric and eight guns — was fighting on every British front while its glamorous stablemate collected the poetry.
