Cayley Glider

A procedural model built in Blender from the type’s published dimensions, painted as BAPC.89, the full-size replica of Sir George Cayley’s 1853 ‘Governable Parachute’ man-carrying glider, drawn by John Sproule, built by Ken Fripp at Southdown Aero Services, Lasham, and flown by Derek Piggott at Brompton Dale for Anglia Television in 1973 and again for the IMAX film ‘On the Wing’, displayed at the Yorkshire Air Museum since 1998: a single kite-like sail of linen 28 ft in span, stretched over a wooden keel and spars with a bent-wood leading edge and slight dihedral, a king post and landing wires above, a boat-shaped car slung beneath on a mast and struts, a fixed cruciform tail on the keel and a steerable cruciform tail worked by the pilot’s tiller, shown standing slightly tail-down on its three wire-spoked wheels: an off-white, weathered sail with sewn seams and tan leather corner patches, varnished wooden spars, a dark brown car with a long pointed yellow panel along each side and a yellow deck around the cockpit, and wooden-rimmed wheels, as it is displayed at Elvington (the wing’s rear edge is estimated from photographs, as no drawing of the replica is published).
