Three wings, a rotary engine, and a reputation larger than its production run: only 320 built, yet it is the silhouette everyone draws when they mean “Great War ace.” It climbed like a monkey and turned like the devil — von Richthofen’s words — and he scored his last nineteen victories in one before an Australian bullet found him over the Somme. His all-red Dr.I made the type immortal. No original survives; Duxford’s flying replica keeps it in the air above the same Cambridgeshire grass that hosts its Allied rivals.
