Where to see First World War aircraft in the UK

The First World War took aviation from novelty to weapon in four years. Britain built more than 5,000 S.E.5 and S.E.5a fighters alone. Few originals survive, and most RFC aerodromes have gone. Stow Maries in Essex is the exception: at least 24 of its 1917 buildings stand, listed Grade II*.

The RAF Museum London has the deepest collection, 14 airframes, including DH.9A F1010 and Bristol F.2b E2466. Shuttleworth flies originals, among them S.E.5a F904 (G-EBIA) and Sopwith Pup G-EBKY. IWM Duxford has seven, including B.E.2c 2699 and R.E.8 F3556. The Fleet Air Arm Museum has Sopwith Baby N2078 and the forward fuselage of a Short 184.
