The Battle of Britain Bunker is the real underground operations room of No. 11 Group, RAF Fighter Command, at RAF Uxbridge — 77 steps below ground and restored to its wartime configuration. It is the room from which the fighter defence of London and the South East was controlled through the summer of 1940, including the climactic day of 15 September 1940, which Churchill watched from the balcony. The tote board, the map table and the WAAF plotters' positions are the actual room, not a reconstruction.
Above ground, a modern visitor centre tells the story of the Dowding System, the plotters and the Battle, with full-size Spitfire and Hurricane replicas outside. The exhibition is normally free to enter; going down into the bunker is a separate guided tour.
