Aviation museums in London

London’s aviation history sits on its edges. Hendon’s aerodrome sent the first official UK airmail in September 1911, and the RAF held its pageants there from 1920. Croydon opened as London’s airport on 29 March 1920. In 1940, Biggin Hill and Hornchurch were Battle of Britain fighter stations, controlled from the 11 Group bunker at Uxbridge.

Greater London and its aviation

The RAF Museum at Hendon, opened in 1972, dominates: 88 airframes and free entry, from a Blériot XXVII to Lancaster R5868. Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar is a working Spitfire restoration shop rather than a museum. The Uxbridge bunker, where Churchill first used his line about ‘the few’ on 16 August 1940, has replica fighters. Croydon keeps Heron G-ANUO.
