Free aviation museums in Essex

Essex’s free museums remember the USAAF. The 381st Bomb Group flew B-17s from Ridgewell from June 1943 to 1945. Boxted hosted B-26 Marauders, then P-47 Thunderbolts of the 56th Fighter Group from April 1944. Wethersfield’s museum is 6 miles from Ridgewell.

The museums are small and run by volunteers. The East Essex Aviation Museum at Clacton holds the forward fuselage wreckage of P-51D Mustang 44-14574. Boxted keeps the rear fuselage of B-26C Marauder 41-35253. Ridgewell and Wethersfield hold no aircraft; Wethersfield’s museum is an upstairs room with a chair lift. Boxted asks for a donation; the other three are free.
