Aviation museums in Essex

Essex defended London in both wars. Stow Maries was a home-defence aerodrome against Zeppelin and Gotha raids, used from 1917 by 37 Squadron. At least 24 original buildings survive, listed Grade II*. North Weald, opened in 1916, flew Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain and later two Norwegian squadrons. Then the USAAF arrived: B-17s at Ridgewell, P-47s at Boxted.

The county

Essex and its aviation

Today’s museums are mostly airfield museums with few airframes. Stow Maries holds 11, all First World War types, including Avro 504K H2311. The exception is Southend, where the Vulcan Restoration Trust keeps XL426 in taxiable condition. Four of the seven are free: Ridgewell, Wethersfield, Boxted and the East Essex Aviation Museum at Clacton.
