Free aviation museums in the East of England

The East of England has more free aviation museums than the rest of the UK combined: 20 of the gazetteer’s 37. Most are run by volunteers on former USAAF airfields, often in the original control tower. Thorpe Abbotts has kept the 100th Bomb Group’s tower as a museum since 1977. Others remember the 381st at Ridgewell, the 95th at Horham and the 306th at Thurleigh.

Worth knowing

Free usually means small and part-time. Only six hold any airframes. The largest is the RAF Coltishall Heritage Centre, with Jaguar GR.1 XZ384 and a Meteor T.7. Halesworth has P-47 Thunderbolt remains and Nuthampstead a B-17 wing section. Three ask for a donation rather than nothing; give one, as they run on it.
